I’ve been hosting with Godaddy.com for about two years. It’s been an okay time. Their domain prices are good, and the hosting costs weren’t too bad. However, my site never had the speed I felt it should have. Then there were the outages, the strange comments from their “people in the know” about not needing to do daylight savings patches, and finally this past weekend, they made a change (I’m guessing changing versions of PHP?) which blew up my hosting world.
Suffice it to say, I spent some time looking prior to this, and had found 1and1.com and planned to switch to them. However, when pressed, I realized they have a strange DB setup… instead of increasing the size of the databases, they increase the number of 100MB databases. Weird.
Anyhow, I still went with them for cost reasons (and I don’t need anything more than a 100MB DB yet…), and am very happy! My site is snappy in exactly the way it wasn’t, when I was on godaddy. It was a tough move, very painful for a couple of the sites I host, but will overall be a good thing.
